CURRENT SITUATION – CH149 CORMORANT

Canada has successfully performed Search and Rescue operations with the Cormorant since its entry to service in the early 2000’s. During this time, the fleet has accumulated over 82,000 hours in support of Force Generation and Force Employment. The Cormorant has now reached the point where obsolescence issues are impacting operational availability, and introducing risk into long term RWSAR capability. With an average life of 16 years and over 5000 hours per helicopter, the fleet requires updating to keep it effective and to extend life expectancy to 2040 and beyond. Unless action is taken now; the risk of obsolescence will continue to increase with the possibility of further impinging on RWSAR operations.
